Parts of the River Don in South Yorkshire flow bright orange due to discharges from an abandoned coal mine near Barnsley.
In a £1.2m Environment Agency scheme the polluted water is to be pumped into lagoons where it will be treated before being returned to the river.
There are 45 old mines causing serious pollution in north and west England.
