 JOBS AXED AS VICKERS SHUTS TANK FACTORY
 Defence company Vickers has announced  
 the loss of nearly 700 British jobs.   
                                        
 The cuts will follow the closure of a  
 tank factory in Leeds, with production 
 of the Challenger 2 tank concentrated  
 in Newcastle.                          
                                        
 Some 450 jobs will go in Leeds and 200 
 in Newcastle, with a further 50        
 redundancies in Wolverhampton.         
                                        
 The firm says a £1.5bn order for the   
 Challenger 2 ends in 2001, with work   
 slowing down next year.
