YELTSIN REMAINS DEFIANT AFTER PROTESTS
Russian President Boris Yeltsin has
vowed to stay in power until elections
in 2000 - day after mass protests
calling for his resignation.
The protests over Russia's economic
crisis fell well short of the "social
explosion" predicted by the Communists.
Mr Yeltsin told military officers he
would maintain personal control of the
armed forces, "at least while I am
here, which is until 2000".
Mr Yeltsin, re-elected in July 1996,
enjoys sweeping presidential powers.
