Indirect viewers or special protective filters must be used when the sun is only partly covered by the moon.
This is equally true whether you are watching the eclipse or photographing it. Cameras do not provide protection.
A simple pinhole viewer or sunscope, made from a shoe box, is a safe way of viewing the eclipse indirectly.
