Campbell Christie, 61, who held the STUC position for 13 years, has joined South West Trains to "assist" its efforts to improve the service.
Mr Christie, who is also on the board of Scottish Enterprise, retired from the STUC in August 1998.
Improving performance and focusing on "people issues" would be among his core tasks, Mr Christie said.
