 RETAIL SALES UP IN SEPTEMBER           
 Annual retail sales volume rose in     
 September, following a standstill in   
 August, according to the CBI's         
 distributive trades survey.            
                                        
 A positive balance of 14% of retailers 
 said that sales volume had risen.      
                                        
 But the CBI noted that the results were
 boosted by comparison with September   
 last year when sales were low after the
 death of the Princess of Wales.        
                                        
 It said that consumer confidence was   
 not robust and that the underlying     
 three-month trend was the lowest since 
 October 1995.
