The rapper, known as Puff Daddy, was stopped by New York police as he and his actress-singer girlfriend Jennifer Lopez were driving away from a club.
Three people had been injured in a shooting at the club.
Police charged him with possessing a stolen gun, but said the charge was unrelated to the shooting.
