CEEFAX 2 162 Thu 17 Sep 17:58/44 ************ ************** * *** *** ** ************** ************ ************************** SERVICE MAY CHARGE FOR FALSE ALARMS Firefighters in the South are calling for a change in the law to deal with an ever-increasing number of false alarms.
The East Sussex brigade says it might now look at charging when systems persistently give false calls.
In the year up to April, the service was called to just over 4000 fires, but more than 600 were false alarms.
Three-quarters of the false alarms were blamed on badly maintained systems. Fire chiefs say the action is vital to stop resources being wasted.
