 EGGHEADS REVIEW DEATH PENALTY TRENDS   
 Academics, sociologists and civil      
 rights specialists are meeting in the  
 Lithuanian capital Vilnius to assess   
 public attitude to the death penalty.  
                                        
 The conference, sponsored by the EU    
 human rights directorate, will discuss 
 the public mood across the continent,  
 the Lithuanian news agency reported.   
                                        
 In Lithuania itself, around 57% of the 
 people supported capital punishment in 
 a survey carried out one year ago.     
                                        
 The death penalty there was frozen in  
 1996 but not removed from the lawbooks.
